There are many ways to show that an action refers to the future, and here we are not restricted to using future tenses only. The future meaning of an action can be expressed by all the future tenses (Future Simple, Future Continuous, Future Perfect, and Future Perfect Continuous), the structure ‘be going to’, Present Simple and Present Continuous. Future Simple is formed by adding ‘will’ or ‘shall’ and is used for talking about future facts, promises we make, assumptions, threats, predictions which are not based on any evidence and decisions made right at the moment of speaking. To practice the usage of this tense, the students can be asked to tell the fortune to their classmates, play “What will you do if…” game, try to predict the changes in future in different spheres of life, and so on. Future Continuous is formed with ‘will’ + auxiliary verb ‘be’ + present participle of the main verb. This tense is used to speak about something that will be in progress at a certain time in the future, to name the future events that are already set, and to predict what someone could be doing at this very moment based on our observations from earlier. The teacher can ask the students to fill in the blank diary for the next week, for example,
and then let them make inquiries and share information to see what each of them will be doing at a certain time next week. Future Perfect tense uses ‘will have + past participle’ structure. This time shows that some action will have been finished by the mentioned time in the future. To teach Future Perfect, the teacher can use the diary idea from above. Another great idea is choosing a famous historical figure and finding information on important dates in his/her life. Later, the students can talk to each other about what their personage achieved by a certain age or year. Future Perfect Continuous is used to say how long the action will have been going on by a certain time in the future and is presented by the following structure: ‘will have been + present participle’. The simplest teaching tip for this tense is to give the students prompts with questions like: ‘How long have you been doing … ?’, ‘How long have you been living in … ?’, etc. The structure ‘be going to’ is frequently used in future meaning to talk about our intentions and plans made before speaking, as well as predictions based on present evidence (as opposed to Future Simple). To practice using it, the students can make and share their plans for upcoming holiday or
their birthday party, or plan their future careers. Present Simple can also be used referring to the future; we do it when we talk about timetables and schedules or when we want to sound more formal. The teacher can provide his/her students with an airport or railway schedule to use as a prompt or to encourage the discussion of their weekly timetables. Another way to indicate the actionÂ’s referring to the future is by using Present Continuous. It carries the future meaning when used to talk about arrangements weÂ’ve made and decisions for which time has no importance. A great activity to practice using Present Continuous in this meaning will be asking each student to fill in blank weekly planner for next week. Then they can share information or try to set up a date by asking when their partner has time to go out.
