This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Writing is often the most neglected skill during English teaching because many teachers don't like to devote classroom time to writing, they prefer to leave that for homework and as a result it's often not done by the student and the skill is not developed. There are 2 different kinds of activities, they are both equally important: those focusing on accuracy and those focusing on fluency. The first one will usually be part of the study phase and will usually be controlled or at least guided, whereas the second one will be used during the activate stage, it will involve creative communication activities. Many students are afraid or don't want to speak in the classroom because they're afraid to make mistakes, because the topic doesn't interest them or because the have peer pressure. THe teacher must overcome these obstacles by creating a nice atmosphere where the students are not afraid to communicate with the teacher or with the other students. This can be done by using a lot of pair or group work or by using a lot of controlled and guided practice before the fluency activities. The writing skills include handwriting, spelling, layout and punctuation. The handwriting is something quite personal and we don't want to push the students to all write the same way, but a bad handwriting
will influence the reader in a negative way, so it is important to encourage the students to improve it. Spelling mistakes can often be considered by the reader as a lack of education. One of the best ways to prevent spelling mistakes is through extensive reading. Punctuation is also something that's personal, but the misuse or the lack of punctuation can render a text very difficult to read. I never realized that writing the alphabet could be difficult for students. As I'm teaching in China this totally concerns me. I always imagined the learning of the language could be difficult to learn (much more than for me) because the grammar and the vocabulary were not close to the ones used in the native language, but never imagined this about the alphabet. I also particularly felt interesting the part about giving feedback. I like the idea of recording the activity after asking the students to make a rough version first and re-record after discussing the ways to improve it. Always focus on the positive aspects of everything, is I believe very important, as it's always more enjoyable for the students and more motivating. Writing down the recurrent mistakes made by the whole class (or a big part of it) in order practice it during another class is a useful tip. It shows the capacity of
the teacher to adapt to the students.
