Unit 7---Reading and listening---Before reading this unit, I have already known there are four language learning skills including listening skills, reading skills, speaking skills and writing skills (but I have never realized they are classified according to receptive skills and productive skills.) When we read we use predictive skills, scanning ,skimming and detailed reading depending on our purpose with different reading materials. I also learn some method how to teach an effective listening and reading class In order to avoid the potential problems of reading and listening we should prepare for our lesson planning before we start: 1. Pre-teaching vocabulary and grammar. A learner will not feel comfortable to read or listen if there are too many new words in a context which they are going to learn. We should pick up the difficulty and unknown language and structures to help them remove their barriers prior to commencing a reading or listening class, which will allow them more self reliant to go through the class smoothly. 2. Careful selection of texts . A teacher should consider to what he/she is going to teach to expose the students the more they will learn. So a careful selection of texts is vital so as to focus on what the students know rather than how much they donÂ’t
know. 3. Topics The topic of the text or dialogue can also help to motivate the students. So we should choose a variety of topics which interests the students and ensure that all the students are equally catered for in the end. 4. Create interest In order to motivate and engage the students affectively in a listening or a reading class, crating interest is essential which will liven things up and have the class vivid 5. Tasks Comprehension tasks are the goals we teach a listing or a reading lesson. In order to check the students understanding, we can ask the students repeat the dialogue or the context .We can also use JIGSAW READING to let the students practice in pairs to share their information and JUMBLED TEXTS to ask the students to re-order the paragraphs. 1
