This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
The four key skills of language learning (speaking, reading, writing and listening) can be divided into two categories: receptive and productive skills. This unit looks at the two productive skills of writing and speaking. Writing tasks can generally be broken down into two categories: situational (post card, formal letter, email) or creative (stories, creation of dialogues, poetry). The skills to be considered for writing tasks are: • Handwriting – this is a personal skill but students need to practice forming the letters if their own language has a different character system • Spelling – this can often be a confusing area for students as English is not a phonetic language and has lots of particular spelling rules, as well as exceptions • Punctuation – some language systems have very different or no punctuation when compared to English Speaking activities are designed to work on one of two different skills – accuracy (the correct usage of grammar and vocabulary) and fluency (the ability to speak without interruption, eg. To stop and think). They can generally be classified as: • Controlled speaking activity – done during the study phase, highly structured such as drilling, pronunciation, etc. • Guided speaking activity – done wither during
the study or activate stage, slightly less structure. • Creative speaking activity – done during the activate stage, small amount of structure, students create own answers. Before creating a speaking or writing activity, it is important that we create a need or desire for the students to communicate by generating interest in the topic. We also need to make sure they have the language knowledge required to complete the task. Using pair or group work activities will allow for maximum interaction and reduce stress for the students.", This unit was quite helpful as it helps understand what the teacher need to do while teaching productive skills. This unit was very helpful as it covered almost everything which is important for students that the teacher needs to know. It also teaches how to deal with shy students and what techniques teachers can use., Last Unit we talked about receptive skills: reading and listening. This Unit we'll see about productive skills: speaking and writing.
