IÂ’ve learnt that reading and listening are equally important receptive skills that engage our minds on the words by processing them from pre-existent knowledge in order to gain real understanding. Basically, we gain the meaning of words from our pre-existing knowledge of the world. There are different motivations for reading and listening, such as: For a purpose and for entertainment. How we read and listen is determined from specialist skills, such as: Predictive skills, Scanning for specific information, skimming for a general idea, emphasizing detailed information, and gaining an understanding of a specific word or phrase meaning by deducting it from the context. Listening and reading problems can be reduced if a teacher pre-teaches potential troublesome language and structures prior to the activity. Also, the teacher can select material that isnÂ’t too difficult, but exposes the student to authentic means. Beginning students are subjected to more non-authentic texts, as not to overwhelm them. Plus, choosing a variety of topics are more likely to stir the interest from the students and motivate them to participate. ItÂ’s important to promote understanding, therefore challenging exercises are recommended, such as utilizing the jigsaw reading activity. In
this unit, ESA patchwork methodology is demonstrated. It utilized the ESESASA format approach to create a successful receptive skill lesson by: Choosing material that interests/motivates the students. It built interest before reading/listening occurred. It pre-taught complex vocabulary or structures without overwhelming the students. It varied the type of material to make it more interesting. It used the material to practice different skills. It used realistic comprehension tasks to help student understanding. Plus, it incorporated the activate phases that was derived from the text.
