This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Unit ten consists of two videos that demonstrate the difference between a good and terrible lesson. In the first lesson, the teacher was a bit aggressive in his manner by telling learners to “come on”. He was also intimidating and inaccessible by stating how easy everything was and that anyone could answer and complete the worksheets correctly. He didn’t do any “teaching”. He disseminated information, rather quickly, wrote some answers on the board, and then barked instructions and read his novel while learners attempted to complete worksheets. In the second video, the same teacher was warm (because he smiled), was much more enthusiastic and lively, and asked everyone’s name to establish rapport. He also taught a lesson on “can” and “can’t”, and used animals and their abilities to demonstrate the proper use of the modal auxiliary verbs. He used a clear Engage stage prompt by asking learners to name animals. In the Study stage, he listed more animals and prompted learners to help him. He also went over the verbs that these animals can and can’t perform such as run, jump, fly, crawl, and swim. In the second Study stage, he gave examples when to use (examples of what to do in the worksheet that was to be given out shortly) can and can’t.
He had learners complete the worksheet, in pairs, and went over the answers popcorn style to keep everyone engaged. The last Study stage activity was showing photos of animals and having learners write sentences of what it can and canÂ’t do. Mark also went over the sentences as a group. He also made sure to use the 3x3 of going over the pronunciation of can and canÂ’t by having learners repeat sentences and then had three different people repeat. Lastly, the activate stage had learners create their own imaginary animals in pairs. During the feedback portion of the activate stage, Mark went over learnersÂ’ sentences. Stay well", When I started to watch the first video... I wanted to leave the classroom right away! I am completely discouraged by bad attitudes when it comes to a learning environment. Watching the whole lesson was a punishment. Unfortunately
