This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
People always communicate because of a certain purpose in mind. There is a difference between accuracy and fluency. Accuracy is the correct use of language. Fluency is the ability to speak without stopping to think. During the study phase we concentrate on accuracy and during activate phase we focus on fluency. There are different types of activities: controlled (used in the study phase), guided (used either in the study or activate phase) and creative communication (used in the activate phase). Students have to be encouraged to speak. There are number of reasons why students might not want to speak (lack of confidence, fear of making mistakes, peer intimidation, lack of interest in the topic, etc.) To encourage creativity and interaction, the following techniques might be used: pair-work, group work, a lot of controlled and guided practice before fluency stage, make speaking activities purposeful, change classroom dynamics. Guidelines for a creative speaking activity: - Before the activity teacher has to decide the aim of the class, try to predict possible problems, arrange timing, prepare necessary materials and practice clear instructions. - During the activity the teacher should arouse students interest, introduce useful structure or vocabulary, give clear instructions and check
if the students understand, give enough time to prepare, correct obvious mistakes after the activity has been finished. - After the activity teacher should provide feedback by indicating how well the class communicated, concentrating on positive aspects; mention some big mistakes which are common to the whole class or personally to individual students. Concerning writing skills, the following areas have to be considered: handwriting (a teacher should always encourage a student to improve his/her handwriting if it makes problems to discern the meaning of what has been written), spelling (can be improved through extensive reading and writing and drawing the students attention to problematic words), layout and punctuation (to help students learn the different layouts of writing, they need to be exposed to and be given a chance to practice with many different style) and creative writing (typical creative writing includes poetry, story or play, and has to be encouraged; it has to be carried put individually or in pairs.)", The previous unit presented the receptive skills whereas this unit focuses on productive skills which are speaking and writing. They are both equally important and should be highly focused on. There are two sub genres known as accuracy and fluency
