As studied earlier in this course, when teaching English as a foreign language we want to make sure our students get as much exposure to the language and the opportunity to use it, which involves teaching them the four basic language skills, reading and listening (receptive skills) and speaking and writing (productive skills). All four language skills must be included in our lessons due to their interdependence. This unit explores the two receptive skills and gives us an example of an ESA patchwork receptive skills lesson. We usually use these two skills for a purpose or for our enjoyment and there are five different ways of going about them depending on what we're actually aiming at. If we're reading device instructions we'll pay attention to each detail; if we only want to know certain bits of information in a text, we'll scan it just to get that information; if we just need to get a general comprehension of what weÂ’re reading or listening to, we'll skim through the text; we may also only need to foresee the contents of an article by looking at just the introduction or the headlines; or else we may need to deduce the meaning of individual words or phrases beyond their literal meaning. Learners may have problems with these skills, they could come across words or grammatical
structures they're not familiar with, or else the pace of the voice and flow of the speech could be an issue when listening. It is important for teachers to be aware of these potential problems and to know how to prevent them. We can pre-teach vocabulary and structures we consider essential to understanding, select our texts very carefully so that they're appropriate for our students' language level, choose topics that interest the students so they will be motivated and will want to participate, use the Engage phase of our lesson to build interest and motivation. It is essential that we get to know our students well in order to make the right choices.
