Unit 11 discussed the important facets of teaching and learning receptive skills. Receptive skills are reading and listening. There are different reasons for listening and reading, such as entertainment, for a purpose, or a combination of the two. In order to read successfully, we must be able to use the following methods and skills: predictive skills, reading for specific information (scanning), getting the general idea (skimming), getting detailed information, and deducing meaning from context. Sentence length, word length, or a number of unfamiliar words can cause difficulties for language learners. It is also easier to read than to listen, because the language is 'captured' in the text and can be re-read. Some ways to combat these difficulties are to pre-teach vocabulary and unknown language structures, encouraging students to learn to understand overall meaning without knowing every word, and careful selection of texts. Texts should be interesting to the students, and should focus on what the students already know, instead of how much they don't know. In addition to choosing interesting topics, it is important to engage students before the reading or listening to increase enthusiasm and motivation. Tasks associated with texts should promote understanding, not just check it,
and should not be too easy or too difficult (should be a challenge that is realistically achievable).
