This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Unit 9 covered lesson planning and began with the debate on whether lesson plans are actually effective for the student. Because I am quite new to teaching I have found that lesson plans can be tedious or difficult depending on my class. While one group may benefit more from a lax plan another may require a fully detailed plan to have a successful class. The unit notes that lesson plans serve many functions such as providing an aid to planning, a working document to help maintain focus of the goals of the course, and finally a record of what each class has done and what materials they have used each lesson. Although lesson plans vary greatly depending on the teacher it is key to remember to not try to script a lesson, maintain flexibility, and keep it simple, among other things. As I have recently started a new job teaching at a language academy with three different age groups and levels of fluency I have found myself in a bit of trouble cementing my way of lesson planning. This unit could not have been available to me at a more convenient time. What needs to be included in a lesson plan sometimes felt confusing for me because I was unsure of how detailed and in depth they should be. Unit 9 states that a lesson plan should include learner objectives, personal aims, context,
teaching aids, anticipated problems, procedure, phase, timing, interaction, class level, number of students, date/time, and teacher’s and observer’s names. This seems like a little much for my personal use, but I think overall it is a good recommendation and I will be including more of the topics than I have used previously. For example, the anticipation of a problem with a particular lesson is a good idea to include with a potential backup activity or “crisis management” aspect is something I have never considered, but will probably start to think about as I plan future lessons. I was happy to see a mock lesson plan so that I could better conceptualize the ideas presented in the reading.
