Unit 12 concerned the teaching of productive skills: speaking and writing. The introduction highlighted the fact that in language teaching, writing is often a neglected skill because of the quiet class time needed for activities. Consequently it is regularly relegated to homework and often not done. This unit stresses that writing is as important a skill as speaking and is an essential part in understanding the differences in spelling and pronunciation in the English language. In the 'speaking' part of the unit there are several reasons are given for why students find it difficult to verbally interact with the teacher and fellow students. This is then followed by ways in which the teacher can over come these hurdles. This part of the unit is then rounded off with a lesson plan and guidelines for engaging in a creative speaking activity in class. The 'writing' section of this unit covered the main teaching points of written language: handwriting, spelling, creative writing, layout and pronunciation. Each section highlighted the issues students may face and what their writing says about them, for example, to anyone reading a letter they have written. The unit then ended with a section on the use of games in the classroom and where to find them online if unsure of the rules. Again
the entire unit stressed the importance of accuracy and fluency in language learning and in what section of an ESA lesson this skills are most appropriate. This unit reminded me about my own language education and the problems I faced as a student in the production of accurate and fluent language,. This meant I could easily identify with the potential issues faced by students and devise creative ways in which I could allay these problems within the class.
