This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Most students prefer to focus on their speaking skills but improving their writing skills should not be ignored. While misunderstandings may be cleared up on the spot through a conversation, speaking requires a greater deal of fluency as you rarely have time to think and plan an answer. Writing on the other hand requires a greater degree of accuracy. When two or more people are communicating with each other we can be sure they are doing so for one of the following general reasons: They have some communicative purpose. They want to say something. They want to listen to something. They are interested in what is being said. Therefore if a teacher wants to introduce a communicative activity they should involve a number of those factors. Accuracy activities concentrate on producing correct language to ensure accurate reproduction. Fluency activities concentrate on allowing the students to experiment with a language, focusing more on effectiveness and flow of the communication. Both are equally important. Controlled speaking activities included individual and group drilling and pre-planned question and answer prompting. Guided speaking activities include accuracy building that is a little more creative and productive such as model dialogues and guided role-play. Creative communication
activities are fluency based content controlled free role-playing sessions, discussions, debates, simulations, and communication games. Many students can seem reluctant to speak in the classroom due to a variety of reasons so the teacher must overcome these obstacles and create a comfortable atmosphere to encourage interaction. This can be done through pair or group work, controlled or guided practice before fluency activities, purposeful speaking activities, fluid classroom dynamics, and careful planning. Always provide feedback after each activity. When fostering a studentÂ’s writing skills many of the same factors as those for speaking lessons need to be considered and incorporated. There are however, a number of differences. Many languages use a different alphabetical system from English and forming English letters may present a major challenge. Poor handwriting needs to be addressed and improved. Incorrect spelling creates misunderstanding and can often be perceived as a lack of education. One of the best ways to help students is through extensive reading. Some languages have completely punctuation and some have none at all. Some languages write from right to left, and some words are not even separated by spaces. To help students learn the different layouts of writing they
need to be exposed to, and given the opportunity to practice, many different styles. Creative writing should be encouraged, as it engages them and the finished product usually provides them with a sense of pride.
