Teaching the receptive skills as well as the productive skills is quite tough and challenging. This skills need mastery and creativity. In this lesson, teaching receptive skills is focused and well-discussed so that the teacher will have great knowledge about this. The process how we understand what we read and listened to depend on the skill we have and the purpose why we do it. AS often said, reading and listening are always hindered which is why many would need enough time in comprehending what they are reading or listening to. These hindrances include the language, the topics and the task that the students will be engaged in. The language, as one of the challenges in reading, must be carefully addressed especially when teaching the receptive skills. Teachers must be oriented with the level of comprehension, language level and level of difficulty that they should teach. There is always a language that fits to every level of language learner. So, we, as teacher, must be careful with it. Another reason
why people also feel the need to effort in understanding what they are reading and listening to is the topic. It is one of the most important things that a teacher should put into consideration. The types of learner, language level, culture, and interest are some of these considerations. It must always be for the interest of the students and not for the teacher. Lastly, the task. In this unit, the task was mentioned and discussed since this thing is one that could develop the students reading and listening skills. Similar to the topic and language, task must also fit to the reading and listening public. Suitability and appropriateness of the task to their skills, interest and age and others must be highly well thought-out. There are tasks that really fit to the topic, unfortunately failed to fit to the age and difficulty. That is why, it is in this lesson that several considerations were individually tackled and simplified. As a whole, teaching receptive skills is not as easy as teaching grammar. It is one of the most difficult skill to develop. As explained in this unit, teaching this skills made me aware that it must be well-planned and a lot of things must be considered.
