This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Speaking and writing are the two productive skills: speaking requires a greater degree of fluency, whilst writing, which is often neglected, requires a greater deal of accuracy. But both, being communicative acts, need a purpose, a motivation, which is exactly what a teacher should arouse in order to create interest in students. Accuracy activities are usually part of the study phase, and are controlled by the teacher to ensure accurate reproduction of language, whereas fluency activities are usually part of the activate phase, and are far less controlled by the teacher. Accuracy and fluency carry equal importance. If students are reluctant to speak, due to lack of confidence or interest in the topic, cultural reasons, fear of making mistakes, the teacher should encourage them to interact with one another through pair or group work, lots of guided practice before fluency activities, and allowing them some time to think about what they are going to say. In writing skills, a number of important factors (that clearly distinguish them from speaking skills) play an important role: spelling, pronunciation, punctuation and handwriting, some of these depending also on the native language of students and on its rules. In order to encourage writing activities creative writing exercises should
be introduced, as they engage and motivate students.", This unit covers productive communication skills which include speaking and writing. Because writing leads to quiet time it is often left to the homework facet of teaching
