This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
In this unit, we focused on how to teach receptive skills. The receptive skills are listening and reading, and are how the students absorb information. This is in contrast to the productive skills of speaking and writing which we will cover in the next lesson. There are two main reasons for receiving new information- either for achieving a specific purpose, or for entertainment. In a classroom, while we strive to engage the students and pick topics which are of interest to them, the majority of their receptive skills will be used purposefully to obtain new information. There are many skills that students need to have in order to be able to read effectively. These include being able to predict the content of the text, being able to scan the paragraph and pick out the relevant details, skimming a text for the overall meaning without getting too in depth, or reading with full comprehension and grasping the context of the language being read, which sometimes requires outside inferences rather than simply the literal meaning. Hearing spoken language presents it's own set of difficulties to learners. Sometimes as a teacher it will be necessary to pre-teach vocabulary if you are aware that your students may be unfamiliar with important terms you will cover in the lesson. Also it is important
to consider the topic, subject matter and type of text you will be introducing to your students. It is good to pick topics that your students are already interested in or will find relevant to their daily life. If you can't use something of interest to everyone, it is a good idea to vary the subjects and to ask questions and create excitement around the subject of the class to engage the students. Some texts you may use could be specifically formulated for students; others may be sources found in everyday life or English literature. It is also important to make sure to test student's receptive skills in a way that measures actual comprehension by giving them tasks which can only be completed if they have understood the material.
