This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit involved the study of the two productive skills of teaching: speaking and writing. Firstly, people's motives for speaking or engaging in conversation in general were looked at. With this in mind, the teacher must therefore create the need and desire for their students to want to communicate with each other in the class in order to maximise student participation and therefore learning too. Accuracy was compared with fluency. Accuracy activities tend to form part of the Study phase of the lesson and focus on the correct use and reproduction of language, whereas fluency activities tend to be part of the Activate stage of the lesson and focus on the flow of communication and the speaker speaking as fluently as possibly without pausing. Different speaking activities were then outlined. These were broken down into: controlled activities, guided activities, and creative communication. Reasons for students being reluctant or hesitant to speak were then considered. Such reasons include: - a lack of confidence; - peer intimidation; - a lack of interest in the topic; - previous learning experiences; - cultural reasons. Techniques to overcome the above issues and to encourage interaction were suggested. Some of these include: - pair-work; - group-work; - plenty of controlled and guided
practice before fluency activities; - make speaking activities purposeful and interesting for the students; - change the classroom dynamics; - careful planning; - allow the students time to think. An example of a typical free/creative speaking activity lesson was then given as well as general guidelines to creating these types of lessons. Writing skills were then looked at in detail. Firstly, challenges related to writing activities were discussed. A typical creative writing activity lesson was then given as well as general guidelines. Games were then discussed and the names of several specific games were provided with the web links to pursue them.
