There are 4 different skills to utilize when learning a language. These skills are categorized into 2 groups. Receptive skills are reading and listening. Productive skills are talking and writing. The reasons to use these skills can either be for entertainment or purpose i.e. listening to an audiobook for entertainment is different to listening to a language CD to identify detail and accomplish specific goals. This relates to reading as well. There can be different ways in which we read due to different goals that we are hoping to achieve, for instance one might only need to skim read, scan the page for something specific, predictively read in order to try predict what might be coming up in the story. One might read for recieving specific detail and one might conduct deductive reading whereby you would make deductions from the main content of the story. There are pro's and con's to the different skills. All are equally important. Reading allows for sentence structure, word length and spelling etc. to be captured on paper which would contribute to better understanding. Listening is not captured but is also affective when trying to stimulate the use of pronounciation and memory, as well as growing a familiarity to the areas of the English language. Speaking is a productive skill as
it is a progression from thinking and understanding to making a permanent transformation in language use. Righting confirms this progress and allows for correction of language vocab as well as overall sentence structure. Throughout an ESA lesson, regardless of the lesson structure it is important to allow the use and stimulate all the skills required for language acquisition.
