Unit 16 was about teaching receptive skills. The two receptive skills are listening and reading. The two productive skills are speaking and writing. All skills our equally important to incorporate into a lesson. Whenever I would take a language test in college, the test would always include a reading, listening, speaking and writing section. The listening section was always the hardest for me, as I did not have confidence in this area. I like how this unit emphasized that confidence is key to gaining listening and reading skills and that topic choice is fundamental in this. For example, the topic should be of interest to the students so they feel more engaged with it. I learned from this unit that readers and listeners employ a number of specialist skills when reading or listening, and their understanding of the context will depend on their expertise in these areas: predictive skills, specific information – scanning, skimming, detailed information, and deduction from text. In this unit test, I found question number 2 to be the most challenging. I felt this question was the most challenging because, to me, looking at the stock market reports to see how your shares are performing and listening to a football commentary on the radio, are both examples of reading or listening
for a purpose. However, I suppose “looking at the stock market” is the MOST correct answer because it emphasizes the purpose, which would be “to see how your shares are performing.”
