This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
In this unit we studied the productive skills speaking and writing. This skills are use to communicate, so there are generalizations that we can make which have particular relevance for the teaching and learning of a language. When we communicate we are doing it for one of the following reasons: • We have some communicative purpose • We want to say something • We want to listen to something • We are interested on what is being said Teachers need to create the need and desire in the students to communicate and bring in some of the factors above so the activity planned can be a success. Writing is the more difficult skill because it requires a greater degree of accuracy. Accuracy activities (usually part of the study phase) are concentrated in producing correct language. Fluency activities (usually part of the activate stage) are concentrated on allowing the students to experiment and be creative with the language. There are three types of speaking activities in the classroom. Controlled activities are based in accuracy and language is control by the teacher. Guided activities are based on accuracy but more creative and productive. The output is still controlled by the teacher but the language is not. Creative communication is a fluency-based activity, the
scenarios are created by the teacher, but the language content is not. As we said before it is very important that teachers encourage students to speak. There are several reasons that may stop students from speaking: lack of confidence, fear of making mistakes, peer intimidation, among others. There are some techniques a teacher can use to encourage interaction: pair work, group work and careful planning are some. There are some factors that teachers need to consider when teaching a writing skill. Handwriting can be a challenge for some students, especially for those whose native language uses a different alphabet. Teachers need to encourage their students to improve their handwriting. Other factors important to consider are spelling, layout, punctuation and creative writing. In this unit we learned the basic factors and techniques we as teachers need to consider when teaching productive skills. We need to always remember that when teaching a receptive or productive skill it is very important to create a good environment among the class so students are more open to create and produce the language. ", The production unit was interesting and for me raised the question of if students do need to be taught writing and spelling where do we begin? Do we start at the very beginning
i.e. reception class? And there is the possibility that we will have multi level classes if we are working outside of a school
