The contents of this unit pertains to the pros and cons of lesson planning and gives suggestions for how an effective teacher should make use of one. Lesson plans can take many different forms depending on the needs and experience of the teacher but some of the common factors in lesson plans are: learner/teacher objectives, context, teaching aids, anticipated problems, solutions for those problems, an outline for lesson phase activities, how long each activity should last, the nature of the activities, the date, and any other relevant notes. One particular pro of having a lesson plan is the ability for a substitute teacher to pick up where you left off. Additionally, extended lesson plans are often essential to structuring more advanced classes and serve as a general timetable of goals for both teacher and students. However, while lesson plans can be useful, the teacher should be careful to remain flexible and use the plan as a set of guidelines rather than a set of rails. Also, a lesson plan is of little use if the teacher does not take any action based on it. It is the teacher's responsibility to make sure the physical learning environment is ready for the students; a lesson plan can hold reminder notes for how the teacher needs to prepare the classroom. I believe that what I
have taken away from this lesson is that there needs to be a balance between structured timetables and the needs of the class. Throughout my school years I witnessed that it was necessary to change lesson plan based on both in-class and external factors and that no lesson plan can account for everything. It is rare that circumstances actually prevent teachers from meeting their key goals for the year and teacher must not fret too much about small setbacks.
