Unit 11 deals with the receptive skills of reading and listening. It noted that when we read some text we often have different motives and change our method of reading according to what we want to get out of it. It mentions five different reading skills, Predictive skills, Specific information (Scanning), General idea (Skimming), Detailed information and Deduction from context. In order to exercise the students' powers of deduction it mentioned that when pre-teaching the vocabulary before reading a passage; don't be tempted to explain every single unknown word as some will be able to be deduced from the context, which helps to develop that skill. The Unit explained that when it comes to the receptive skill of listening, this is recognized as being more difficult than reading as the speed that the student has to process the information is far quicker and the information cannot be reviewed as when you can quickly scan some written text again to extract the point you need. However, the listening skill is absolutely essential if the student is to progress to holding two-way conversations in English, processing the comments that someone has made and then replying to them appropriately. Therefore, this unit has convinced me that the teaching of these receptive skills should be given
a prominent place in the planning of each lesson.", This unit focuses on two of the four basic skills in language and one of them is receptive skills. Receptive is made up of two skills: Reading and listening. The motives for reading and listening are for purpose and for entertainment.
