This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
I have some difficulties with Unit 12. It is not quite clear who controls a fluency-based activity. According to the unit during a fluency-based activity a teacher should: Do all the preparation Arouse studentsÂ’ interest Remind students of some structures or vocabulary Give clear instructions Monitor the activity (do not interrupt except to provide help) Watch the pace Evaluate, correct (but not before the activity is finished), not to overcorrect, give feedback I understand that fluency-based activities are more concerned with fluency than accuracy but according to the unit it is still controlled by the teacher. I believe students are supposed to control their own work as well. The second question is about the factors to consider when teaching writing. It is said that poor handwriting can influence a reader in a negative way, it is also said that spelling is important and so as punctuation. The last two can cause much confusion if the rules are absolutely different from those in studentsÂ’ mother tongue. More than that, they note that spelling is especially difficult due to the fact that pronunciation doesnÂ’t usually reflect it. Though, they say itÂ’s quite important to know in what different ways a single sound can be written. So, it seams that spelling, pronunciation,
handwriting and punctuation are important considerations when teaching of writing skills. ThereÂ’s a question 10 in test 12. Which of the following is the least important consideration in the teaching of writing skills? Pronunciation or penmanship or spelling or punctuation. I cannot understand how I can decide which one is the least important as all four are important according to the unit. Penmanship is not vitally important, but poor handwriting may be a problem. Spelling is important for sure.
