Unit 12 - Teaching Productive Skills During this unit we learned how to teach the productive skills of speaking and writing. We learned about accuracy versus fluency activities, and which activities are better for accuracy and which activities are better for fluency. Each are equally important, but are for different stages that students can understand. Speaking activities typically uses controlled activities, guided activities, and creative communication. There are a variety of ways to encourage students to speak during class. Many students are nervous or non confident during class due to a lack of confidence, a fear of making mistakes, peer intimidation, lack of interest in the topic, previous learning experiences, and cultural reasons. There are some techniques to encourage interaction between students, which includes using pair work or using group work. To teach the productive skill of writing, we learned the challenges of handwriting, spelling, layout and punctuation, and creative writing. Teaching creative writing can be a challenge, but we learned some excellent examples of the engage-study-activate (ESA) method. Finally, there are a variety of games that can be used, at least twenty were used as examples from wikipedia. These include hangman, 20 Questions, charades,
twister, and many many more. Most importantly, we focused on teaching students the basics of reading and writing. ", In this unit I learned about productive skills speaking and writing.
