This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Watching the two videos enabled me to see how the attitude and teaching methods of a teacher can greatly effect the amount of student participation and active learning in a classroom. The students in the first video seemed to be intimidated and quiet, and truly, I also felt that way after seeing how the teacher was acting. Some of the wrong things he was doing included: saying that everything was easy and making the students feel incompetent because they were not understanding him, repeating difficult concepts instead of explaining them, not varying any activities (i.e. just doing worksheets the whole time), making the class very teacher-centric in that he did not facilitate any pair or group work, looking angry and upset, reading while the class worked, and lastly, not interacting with the students by name and thus not getting them personally invested in the material. In the second video, the same teacher was able to rouse his students into active participation and thus enable better learning. He began the lesson with a smile and first got to know everyone's names. He then started the class with a game in which the students worked in pairs and thus felt less burdened with responsibility. He was encouraging and never gave answers but rather prompted his students to get them on their
own. He used miming and pictures as well as examples of each activity to make sure his students understood; furthermore, he used student's names and called on everyone in turn, using their name at the end of the question to ensure that everyone was paying attention. The class was robust and I could tell that the students felt like they were progressing, and the teacher himself confirmed this with his constant encouragements. At the end, everyone clapped, not just the teacher. Overall, the second video demonstrated how dynamic and fun a class can be if the teacher is not simply instructing the students but rather working alongside them and motivating them to want to learn on their own.
