This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
In this lesson we have seen that when you have to prepare a lesson there are several things that you should take into account, for example the fact that you should have a written document with the organization of this day in order to have a guidance of the lesson. We call it “lesson plan” and it has to be flexible, simple and clear, it should have the approximated time that you are going to use for each activity, a balance of skills practiced, and all the lessons that you prepare should have the same structure. What should we include in our lesson plan? It is not compulsory to add certain points, but it is recommendable that you have included several things like: the learners’ objectives, your personal objectives too, the context of the lesson in order to fit the past and future ones, the material that you will need, the anticipated problems that you may find, the activities that you will do with your students ordered by phases (engage study and activate), the time that each activity is supposed to take (though it should not be very strict because these things can change; it should be flexible), who is going to interact and participate in every activity, the level of this group, the number of students that you think that will come that day, the date and finally, if
the class is being monitored, the names of the teacher/s and observer/s. To plan a sequence of lessons the procedure is more or less the same. What you should take into account specifically for this is the flexibility (something crucial because you can never be sure of how the students will react and what it is going to happen that day), the goals you want your students to achieve by the end of the sequence, the revisions that you will do to revise everything learnt and the variety and balance of the lesson, in order to practice all the skills equally and with a great variety of activities organized. If you want to make sure that your lesson is a success, better check that you brought the lesson plan, that you have all the material needed (and that it works), you can arrange the seating and make sure that the blackboard is clean, and of course, when the students enter the class, start talking to them in order to break the ice and motivate them for the lesson. Every teacher wants to improve and make his/her lesson more engaging and enjoyable, so something useful to do it is a self-evaluation. It consists of writing an evaluation of the class and making some notes about how the lesson went and what could be improved. This way you can see the strengths and weaknesses of your classes
and try to improve them as much as you can.
