This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
The two productive skills are speaking and writing. What is the difference between accuracy and fluency activities? Accuracy activities (usually part of the study phase) are usually controlled to ensure accurate reproduction of language. Fluency activities (usually part of the activate phase) are concentrated on allowing the students to experiment and be creative with language. Accuracy is not the main concern. Instead, we are more concerned with the effectiveness and flow of the communication in fluency activities. Thus, accuracy and fluency are both important. Controlled/accuracy based activities include drilling (choral and individual listening to and repetition of the teacher's model of pronunciation) and prompting (pre-planned question and answer). Guided activities include model dialogues and guided role-play. Fluency based activities include free role-play, discussions, information gap, debates, simulations, and communication games. There are times when students refuse to speak in the classroom due to lack of confidence, fear of making mistakes, lack of interest in the topic, cultural reasons, peer intimidation, and previous learning experiences. Therefore, the teacher should try to create a comfortable atmosphere and encourage student interaction. The teacher can do so by
encouraging pair-work, group-work, change classroom dynamics, careful planning, make speaking activities purposeful, plenty of controlled and guided practice before fluency activities. The general guideline for a creative speaking activity include choosing a topic that will motivate the students, ensuring students have enough preparation time for the activity, giving simple and clear instructions.
