This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
In unit 10, I saw two videos of an executed lesson plan. There were two different approaches by the same teacher to the same students. The drastic change was the attitude of the teacher. In the first video, he seemed to do everything wrong that the previous units have been instructing us to do. He didnÂ’t make the students feel comfortable and wasnÂ’t descriptive of what he was looking for in the class. There were no visual aids, gestures, or even a smile. It greatly affected the studentsÂ’ willingness to participate and increased their anxiety level. He didnÂ’t even remember their names or introduce himself. Body language was a huge reason the students seemed very disengaging which in turn gave the same reaction from the students. In the second video, I saw a lesson that went much better because of the attitude of the teacher. He introduced himself and he tried to remember who his students are. It was more personal and it brought a lively environment. He started with an Engage activity that gave an opening for students to participate. They started as pairs and then as a whole class worked together to build a list of animals. Then using miming he was able to build another list of movements. Finally, he was able to begin his main objective of teaching them
the modal verb can and canÂ’t. Mark did a better job in prompting the students for answers, thus there was more participation. And he ended the lesson with a creative activity that used the skills from the study phase. In the end, it was a fairly good example of outcomes based on a teacherÂ’s attitude in the classroom. Being organized is a huge factor in a teacherÂ’s ability to prompt students and having more visual props helped a lot. Giving examples of an outcome of the activity are extremely helpful to students. The most important difference was in the rapport that was displayed by creating a more personable environment for students.", In this lesson it covered the two videos - one in which the teacher poorly instructs a lesson and the second one in which the teacher instructs a good lesson to his students. Between the two lessons
