Unit 9 focuses on lesson planning and the importance of maintaining a flexible plan with records. The three main important functions of writing a lesson plan are: an aid to planning whereby the objective to be achieved is written down by the teacher. It is then followed by a working document which acts as a reference point for the teacher in order to make sure a structure is being followed and flexibility is maintained. The third and very important aspect is record keeping which is important in order to track progress and anticipate problems. A lesson plan should be simple, unscripted yet structured, must use a balance of skills, and open to adaptation. A teacher should always be organized and prepared and this also ties into maintaining desired discipline in the classroom as explained in earlier chapters. When creating a lesson plan, the following should be kept in mind: learner's objective which describes the items that the students should know by the end of a lesson. A teacher's personal goals are also part of the lesson plan which is what the teacher wants to achieve or gain from teaching the particular lesson. Context is important to recognize as it clarifies the theme around which a lesson should be planned. A teacher should always be prepared with teaching aids and anticipate
problems and thus its solutions prior to starting a lesson. The procedure as to how/who/where/what should be pre-planned in order to maintain flexibility. The phase (ESA) is also an important aspect of lesson planning. Timing and procedure work simultaneously whereby each activity should be timed in order to maintain discipline and control within a classroom. Interaction, whether it is teacher-student, student-student should be pre-planned while keeping in mind the level of English being taught. As mentioned earlier, a record must be maintained for organizational purposes of date and time. Lastly, it is important to make note of teacher's and observer's name as part of record-keeping. Planning a sequence of lessons demands flexibility, goals, revision of previous materials, and variety and balance in order to keep the students motivated.
