Unit 11 raises some important issues every teacher has to deal with on a daily basis—how to teach the receptive skills (reading and listening). Special attention is paid to the various specialist skills involved in reading and listening (and very often tested by major English examinations round the world—skills like skimming, scanning and deduction—but also important in everyday communication). Then some problems teachers encounter when teaching those skills are discussed—for instance, the complexity of the language (vocabulary and grammar structures) used in the reading/listening texts, the nature/topic of the texts, the tasks to be designed for aiding/promoting comprehension rather than just checking understanding. Helpful solutions to those problems are also suggested. The fact that students should be taught how to understand listening or reading texts without being hindered by some unfamiliar words is a very important skill. I’ve realized, being a non-native speaker of the language, that it’s almost impossible to know all the words in a foreign language (it’s not even possible in your native language). So, throughout my teaching career, I’ve consistently tried to help students realize and get used to the fact that they will not always know every
single word they encounter but that should not interfere with their comprehension—you can always grasp the gist (and most of the details) without being able to understand every single word.
