This unit about teaching receptive skills was very important to me because it illustrated how important it is to understand your students and their learning needs so that you can arrange the lesson and choose the materials that best fit your students. Receptive skills are reading and listening. We can read and listen for a purpose or for entertainment and sometimes these skills will be for both a purpose and for our entertainment. We utilize different skills while we are reading and listening. We can use predictive skills that allow us to predict the content of a text from the headline or introduction. We can use scanning when we want to find specific information. We can use skimming when we want to get the general idea, or the gist of the text. We can read or listen in a more focused manner so that we can get detailed information. We also use skills that allow us to deduce the meaning from the text. We can pre-teach difficult or unknown vocabulary before a reading or listening activity to help remove some of the obstacles for our students. We can use this during the study phase of our lesson. We want to focus on the vocabulary that is essential. We want to be careful about the texts that we select for our lesson. Non-authentic texts allow our students to have access to material
that uses language more suited for our students' abilities. Authentic texts are not designed for language students but can help them build confidence in their skills. We want to pick a variety of topics, over time, that interest and motivate our students so that they will be more likely to engage with the material. We should get to know our students so that we can understand them and their interests and that will help us when we select material. It is very important to create interest and engage the students during the engage phase of the lesson. It is important, when providing comprehension tasks, that we not only check the students understanding but also promote their understanding. We should pick tasks that are not too easy or too difficult. We want the tasks to be challenging but realistically achievable.
