This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
In this lesson we learned all the tenses to express future and we got to know when and how to use them. A) Future simple When to use them: - Future facts and certainties: He will get his degree in April - Promises: I will always love you. - Predictions (no present evidence): 2015 will be a wonderful year for everybody. - Assumptions/speculations: If he keeps behaving that way he will have to change school. - Spontaneous decisions/actions: I will translate all the information so you can understand them. - Threats: Clean up your room or IÂ’ll throw away everything. grammar forms: - Affirmative: I + shall/will + verb (without to) he/she/it + will + verb (without to) we + shall/will + verb (without to) you + will + verb (without to) they + will + verb (without to) eg:If I go to Rome, I will send you a postcard - Negative I + shall/will+ not + verb (without to) he/she/it + will + not + verb (without to) we + shall/will + not + verb (without to) you + will + not + verb (without to) they + will + not + verb (without to) eg: I won't tell anybody your secrets. - Question: Shall/will + I + verb (without to) Will + he/she/it + verb (without to) Shall/will + we + verb (without to) Will + you + verb (without to) Will + they + verb (without to) Shall I get my jacket? Will 2015 be
a wonderful year? teaching ideas: 1) Future Questionnaire. I would introduce the future by talking about jobs and profession and as ACTIVATE phase I would do a FIND SOMEONE WHO ... with the future sentence. I would give them a worksheet where to write their own answers and their classmatesÂ’ ones and I would ask them to work in pairs. On the worksheet there would be questions such as: Will you go to University? Where will you go on Holiday? What kind of sport will you play? I would then ask my students to share with the whole class the information they have collected. 2. Palm Reader. I would draw on the whiteboard the shape of an hand and I would draw in it different lines, each one related to: life, love, children, jobs. Then I would read their hand hands foreseeing their future - saying sentences in future simple tense. At the end of the lesson I would ask them to read my hand, and IÂ’m expecting them to be able to produce sentences as follow: You will be a teacher. You will have 5 kids, you will get married and then divorce, you will have a long life... etc... b) Future continuous When to use it: - Actions in progress at a particular time/moment in the future: At midnight tomorrow I will be flying away to L.A. - Present Predictions: He will probably be discussing the
new business plan now. - To politely inquire people about their future plans without any intentions to influence their future actions: What will you be telling him? -To describe the atmosphere in the Future: Some will be talking. Others will be dancing. My mom will be drinking, everything will be perfect. - Future fixed or well established plans/events: He will be having class everyday at 6.00 pm. next week. = Interrupted Action in the Future: I will be watching TV when she comes back home. grammatical forms: - Affirmative: Subject + will + be + verb + ing (present participle) eg:I will be watching TV, when you get home. - Negative: Subject + will + not + be + verb + ing (present participle) eg:They won't be coming to the party. - Question: Will + subject + be + verb + ing (present participle) eg:Will she be having breakfast now? teaching ideas: 1. I would give them a template to create a schedule of their week. Then in pairs I would ask them to talk about what they will be doing at a particular time on a particular day. 2. I would ask the students to create a story about their EVIL TWIN. I would ask them to imagine they have a “Bad” twin brother/sister and to imagine what he will be doing at a certain time and day in the future. I would expect them to produce sentences
like: While I will be sleeping at 3 oÂ’clock a.m he will be drinking beer with his friends. While I will be studying he will be playing poker. While mom, dad and I will be packing up our staff to go on vacation, he will be trying to run away. c) Future perfect when to use it: To express the idea that something will occur before another action in the future. It can also show that something will have been done before or by a specific time in the future. eg: Will she have learned enough English to communicate before she moves to Australia? By the beginning of August I will have completed the TEFL course. grammatical forms: - Affirmative: Subject + will + have + past participle I will have finished the test by Monday. - Negative: Subject + will + not + have + past participle You won't have written many letters. - Question: Will + subject + have + past participle Will she have finished baking the cake? teaching ideas: 1. I would ask my students to write a letter to their pen-friends to let them know how their life will be in the next coming months. 2. (high level students) After having watched a part of the Movie IÂ’m a Legend by Will Smith, I would ask my students to imagine they were able to foreseen what will have happened to New York within 3/4 years as a consequence
of the scientific discovery the movie talks about. I’m expecting the students to produce sentences such as: People will have left their homes.Wild animals will have escaped from zoos, and there will have been a lot of changes all around the world etc.... d) Future perfect continuous We use the future perfect continuous to show that something will continue up until a particular event or time in the future. By this time tomorrow I will have been studying for my test for more than 30 days. Teaching ideas: 1. I would give my students some “math problems” to solve in pairs. eg: By the year 2013, how long will you have been studying English? By the year 2050 How many houses will you have been changing? I’m expecting them to produce sentences such as: By 2013 I will have been studying English for 20 years. I will have been changing 30 houses. etc... 2. I would ask my students to discuss how long they will have been doing an activity, sport or hobby by a time set in the future. I’m expecting them to be able to produce sentences as following: By the end of the year I will have been playing football 300 million times. By Next august I will have been looking for a girlfriend for 4 years. e) ‘Going to’ future when to use it: - Intentions: I'm not going to
study German any longer. - Predictions: After what you have done, I think they are going to fire you. - Plans: Next July I'm going to study Spanish in Spain. grammatical forms: - Affirmative: Subject + am/are (auxiliary to be-simple present) + going to + verb (base form) eg: IÂ’m going to study Spanish next year. - Negative: Subject + am/are + not + going to + verb (base form) eg: She is not going to wait for him. - Question: Am/are + subject + going to + verb (base form) eg: Are you going to tell him the truth? Teaching ideas: 1. True or false plans. I would ask my students to pair up and try to discovers plans for the future. I would give them some words or phrases that they must use to make up sentences with going to. they can ask and answer question about their partner such as: are you going to quit smoking? Are you going to lie to your boyfriend? And so on, those who guess the real plans of their partners get points. 2. Guessing game: one student tells the other smalls things related to a bigger plan and the others have to guess what the bigger plan is. IÂ’m expecting them to be able to produce sentences similar to: IÂ’m going to buy a new dress. IÂ’m going to book a restaurant. IÂ’m going to look for rings. And the others will able to guess: You are going
to get married. Plus we have simple present which we can express future situations with, such as: suggesting a more formal situation, telling time tables and schedules, suggesting a more impersonal tone. We can also use present continuous to talk about future for definite arrangements or about decisions without exact end dates. ", This unit was more challenging for me but still good. The test really had me thinking a lot through each question which was good because it really made sure that I knew what I was talking about. I thought it was interesting to learn about how the present tense can be used in the future., This is a very complex unit but I think that I have mastered it. I learned that there are seven future tenses and all of them have very specific meanings. I don't believe that it is valuable to teach someone all the minor tenses if they are interested in being a fluent English speaker as man native English speakers will not recognize the subtleties in the structure., This unit covers the many ways we speak of the future in the English language.
