This unit was extremely interesting as it showed just how important certain elements are in conducting an effective lesson. The first moments of the lessons were critical in setting the tone for the entire class. Depending on the teacher's initial behavior, the engagement, comfort, happiness, and participation level of the students varied enormously. In the first lesson, the teacher clapped his hands abruptly, gave no introduction and launched straight into the lesson. His manner was firm and unfriendly. He spoke very fast, making his speech indistinct. He paced up and down the room awkwardly. His attitude affected the class and the atmosphere felt tense and the students seemed intimidated. He asked the students questions using terminology that they couldn't understand and he didn't try to re-phrase his questions in simpler terms with examples. He was disorganized with his materials, he was dismissive of students' questions, he gave no instructions for the worksheet he distributed, he didn't monitor the students during the process to identify their strengths and weaknesses. He gave no praise or encouragement for correct answers. The first lesson was very poorly executed. In the second lesson, the teacher began the class energetically and positively, with a smiling face and a self
introduction. He showed interest in the students and wanted to get to know their names. His caring and friendly attitude immediately encouraged the students. They appeared interested, at ease, and happy to participate. The teacher's actions at each stage were literally the polar opposite from the first lesson. he spoke slowly and clearly, his instructions were easy to follow, his explanations were simple and varied. He was accommodating, and full of praise for the students.He divided the class into pairs for assignments, and asked questions to both individuals and pairs so as to monitor them properly. He used prompts, mime, and gestures and tried to elicit as much as he could from the students. Each stage was executed well. It was insightful and educational for me to watch these lessons.
