This unit concerns the productive skills: Speaking and writing, which are used to communicate. For an activity to get successful the teacher needs to create the need and desire in the students. (The students need to understand the point in doing something.) Speaking activities are separated in 3 activities. - Controlled = e.g. drilling and prompting. (Accuracy based activities.) - Guided = e.g. model dialogues and guided role-play. (Accuracy based activities.) - Creative communication = e.g. discussions, free role-play, debates, simulationsÂ… (Fluency based activities.) ItÂ’s important to create a comfortable atmosphere for the students when doing speaking activities, when the students can be reluctant to speak in the classroom. E.g. because the students are intimidated, cultural reasons, lack of confidence, lack of interestÂ… Some techniques to prevent this, is by creating confidence in the students. E.g. by making a clear purpose with the activities and thereby creating a desire and need in the students. Written activities are separated from speaking activities when there are a number of differences, e.g. handwriting, spelling, layout and punctuation. Handwriting is a personal thing, but can have a negative influence to the reader, if the handwriting is poor. Therefore
it’s important to encourage the students to improve their handwriting. Spelling can create mistakes – though the English spelling can be very difficult, by the fact that some words are pronounced the same way, but written differently. For layout and punctuation the students needs to be exposed to different layouts, to learn the difference en letters, e-mail... Also in creative writing the students needs to be exposed and encouraged to create own work. Games are always a good idea as an integrated part of the lesson – but not only as an amusing diversion. There are 2 types of games. - Competitive games: players or teams compete to reach the goal. - Co-operative games: players or teams work together towards a common goal. o These are divided in communicative and linguistic games.
