Unit 11 provided resources and understanding in regards to the teaching of receptive skills, particularly reading and listening. The unit began with information that outlined the 4 basic skills in language: receptive- reading & listening and productive- speaking & writing. The unit then focused its content of the receptive skills of language, reading & listening. The unit defined why we read: for purpose and for entertainment, as well as what the benefits are from each of the reasons. The unit then detailed inform of how we read and listen. Through the incorporation of our ears, eyes and minds we are able to gather and process the information we have before us most effectively. It also discussed the various skills that make up our reading & listening abilities: predictive skills, scanning, skimming, detailed information and deductive skills. Further, the unit covered problems with listening & reading and how to combat them: Language-pre-teaching vocabulary, careful selection of texts and type of texts best suited for learners, selecting topics that motivate students, motivating the students about the text, providing comprehensive tasks that build on their skills, and activities that encourage their skills. Finally, the unit outlined an example a patchwork lesson & its components,
as well as the various activities that would go along with it. This unit was very informative as it provided relevant information on reading & listening. On the surface, it seems very easy to understand that reading & listening are important skills that must be utilized. This unit was a value to me because it went much deeper than the surface level. I learned that there are a variety of motivations for reading & listening and each motivation serve as the charge for a students learning success. Further, the unit broke down the skills necessary to read & listen successfully while also giving very good examples of teaching activities that can best bring out these skills. Lastly, I learned about a good lesson plan structure through walking through and completing the activity attached to the lesson. This was a great unit in helping me understand the specific & detailed pieces that go into encouraging successful reading & listening activities with students.", The breakdown of the specialist receptive skills was very helpful and will help in planning future lessons
