This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Unit 12 was a lesson that dealt with Teaching Productive Skills. The lesson focused speaking and writing as a means of communication. One important aspect of the lesson was the reasons for communication. The text said that there were four reasons. The first was the people communicate because they have some reason to communicate. The second is because they want to say something. Thirdly people want to listen to something and finally people are interested in what is being said. Another aspect of the lesson was dealing with accuracy and fluency. Both of these activities are of equal importance. Both of them come in different parts of the lesson though. Accuracy activities are found in the study portion of the lesson where the students are concentrating on using accurate and correct language. Fluency activities are usually found in the activate phase of the lesson where it allows the student to experiment and be creative with the language. This would be true in both the writing and the speaking phase of communication. A third aspect of the lesson was talked about getting students to talk in class. Many students come to class and just do not want to talk out loud in front of the group. This can be for a variety of reasons such as , lacking confidence, peer intimidation,
making a mistake, maybe lack of interest in the topic and in some case cultural reasons. Some of the ways that these barriers can be broken down is with pair work, small group work, relevant speaking topics and time to prepare for speaking in front of the group. Encouragement is always important in getting students to feel like they can speak in front of the group. The last section of the unit talked about the use of games in the classroom. Games can be used very effectively to have the students be learning without realizing that they are being used as a teaching tool. Games like 20 Questions and Hangman get the students involved in using the language by causing them to ask questions about things that they may have knowledge in but did not realize that they knew as much as they did. Hangman is good because it works on spelling skills and letter usage. One important thing with Hangman is that if you are letting it be a student led game make sure that the moderator knows how to correctly spell the clues.", Unit 12 addresses the productive skills of language: speaking and writing. Speaking and writing may be different in a lot of ways; however
