This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
In Unit 10 I watched 2 videos that depicted the same lesson presented in different ways. I realize from watching these videos that a teacher's attitude can be either very helpful to students and their learning process or very detrimental. Before the teacher in the first lesson even started with the class his demeanor was negative and started without introducing himself or breaking the ice with his students. The second lesson showed the teacher smiling and asking students names and creating a positive rapport within the classroom. The teacher in the first lesson did not even try and get the students interested in the lesson by starting with an Engage stage activity. The teacher in the second lesson encouraged students to name animals, which gave these students the chance to practice their vocabulary and to feel comfortable at the start of the lesson. By working in pairs and sharing with the class students also learn from each other and get more student to student talking time. In the first lesson the teacher intimidates the students by repeating how easy everything is and by correcting students through out. The teacher also doesn't give a chance for peer correction. The teacher in the first lesson corrects students only when necessary and gives them the freedom to speak
in the activate and engage phase without correction. During the study phase the teacher also allows peer correction, which is more beneficial to the students. The first teacher does not explain activities is generally negative and has his back to the board for more time than is necessary and ignores some questions asked by the students saying that he would get to it later. These are just a few of many examples of things that are done differently in the video's and how they influence the students. From this Unit I have mainly learnt that a positive attitude, preparation and sticking to the engage, study, activate lesson plan goes a long way in getting students involved and creating a positive and functional learning environment.
