This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Speaking and Writing Speaking and Writing are productive skills, they help us show that we can communicate the language, not only absorb it. Speaking Skills are usually cleared up with teachers and sorted out in the classroom because we are talking to answer questions, and discuss ideas. There is more fluency involved as there is less thinking time than writing. For Writing you can spend longer to think about what to write, so you have more chance of refining what you will say, but you have to take into consideration things like formal or informal writing, tones of the text, etc. When people are communicating together, it is usually because: 1) They want to say something 2) or they need to get some information across 3) they are interested in what the person has to say 4) They want to listen to something So to get the students involved and talking, the teacher needs to be able to bring out one of these reasons for the students to communicate. If not present, the activity will not be successful. Accuracy - concentrated on producing good correct language, so usually left to work with this on the Study Stage. Things like drilling, prompting and writing exercises. Fluency - this is about getting them to talk and talk and be freer to experiment with the language, so there is
less correcting and more guiding to open up and talk. Things like role-play, debates, simulations and discussions in this section are better, so usually in the Activate Stage. People are scared to speak if they are intimidated, scared of making mistakes and lack confidence. So create a comfortable atmosphere so they feel more secure, it's okay to make mistakes in the classroom as they help you learn. Things like pair work and group work are useful in bringing the scale of people potentially listening to you down. Plan well, make activities contextual and give students time to plan and think if they need it (which often than not they might). Writing Students learning language will often not have developed writing skills as much because some teachers ignore it, or leave it for homework which doesn't get done. There are different factors to focus on in this skill set: -handwriting - using a different alphabet system is something different for a lot of students, so practising writing skills will make sure students can communicate effectively -spelling -punctuation When doing creative writing, there are different types of writing sets to think about. There are poems and stories and plays, these encourage students to be engaged in thinking about the language but you have the same
basic requirements of the students wanting to write, to produce something. Creative writing is different to formal writing, like writing letters and formal applications and things, but also useful!", Unit 12 goes over speaking and writing. What I learnt this unit is that getting a class to talk and participate in activities maybe difficult. Students often remain quiet in class because they fear making mistakes are intimidated by their peers or lack confidence. However there are a number of techniques that a teacher can use to encourage discussion. For example pair work
