This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Unit 4 gives information on how to approach teaching vocabulary, grammar and functions to students. It talks about the key points to consider when teaching one of these areas, such as how to select an item, what the students need to know about it and how difficult it may be to learn a particular item. Also covered are some techniques for teaching vocabulary, grammar and functions, along with some example lesson plans. Although in this unit I felt that much of the information was already reasonably clear and as such mostly served to reinforce things that I previously knew, such as how to select vocabulary or grammar and what students need to know about an item, there were some interesting points as well. For example, when thinking about how difficult vocabulary may be to learn, not only should one consider the similarity to the students' own language, but also the similarity between previously learned English vocabulary as well. The frequency of use of vocabulary was also an interesting point to consider as well as the 'teachability' of words. For grammar, thinking about the spoken and written forms was something that I learned, as previously I had not considered English to have much difference between the two. While I feel that in many cases the spoken form may be considered slang
or at least very casual, it is still important to let students know the differences. The example techniques provided for vocabulary, grammar and functions was also very useful and I am sure will come in useful when planning lessons in the future. Finally, the information regarding receptive and productive vocabulary was something that despite understanding well myself(as I am currently a language student and can attest to having a large difference between the words I can understand and the words I can use), I had not previously realised that it had special terminology and it certainly important to remember.
