This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Unit 12 examines the two productive skills—speaking and writing. In order for speaking/writing activities to be successful and effective, teachers need to provide a reason for students to communicate—students should feel willing and motivated to engage in the communicative activities. Further on, a distinction is made between accuracy and fluency activities, which stages of the lesson they are used, and what each of them is focused on. Though one might assume one is more important than the other, in fact they are equally important but are pursued in different stages of the lesson. Next, the unit provides a few ideas for controlled, guided and creative use of the language, and emphasizes the difference between them. An important section of the unit deals with some factors that might affect students’ willingness to participate in speaking activities such as peer intimidation, lack of interest in the topic, fear of making a mistake or (negative) previous experience. Some techniques for overcoming students’ reluctance to speak and for making them feel more at ease in the class are further examined. I believe one of the first things a teacher should do to that end is to establish a relaxed, friendly atmosphere conducive to students abandoning their inhibitions and thus
becoming more actively involved in the lesson activities. Of course, group work, pair work, providing enough controlled practice also contribute significantly. The next section of the unit tackles some aspects of writing skills that we need to consider when teaching. Finally, the unit touches upon some communicative and linguistic games that could be utilized in the classroom on a regular basis as an important element of the teaching/learning process not just for entertainment. In my teaching practice, I also use a lot of games to practice different skills—such as Scrabble and Taboo (or different versions of the hot seat game) that student seem to enjoy immensely. Taboo or Hot Seat have proved very effective and stimulating in improving students’ speaking skills.", This unit focused on teaching productive skills. As usual
