This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
In this unit I learned about approaches used to create effective lesson depending on material lesson is focused. Grammar, vocabulary and functions are all important and should be taught in different ways. Lessons that are focused on grammar and vocabulary usually use “straight arrow” ESA approach, and lessons that are focused on functions are usually use “boomerang” or “patchwork” ESA approach. Vocabulary Vocabulary is very important on early stages and should be selected depending on appropriacy to students and the task, frequency and coverage and teachability. Students should be informed about word's meaning, use, word grammar, interaction, spelling and pronunciation. The successful digestion of the word usually depends on the word's appropriacy, it's similarity to students' language and English words already known, how easy it's spelled or pronounced. In order to explain the meaning of the word to students teacher may use a vast variety of activities on Engage, Study and Activate stages of the lesson. First student can discuss a picture or their own experience connected to aimed vocabulary, Study activities should include word searches, crosswords, reading texts, dialogues with new words and pronunciation exercises. We choose grammatical structures taking
into account the level of the class and course syllabus we are using. Students should know the meaning, use, forms and patterns of the language, any differences in spoken and written forms. Activities for Engage stage may include discussions, prompting, question and answer, any additional objects. Activities for Study stage may include sentence building and puzzling activities, working with texts and dialogues containing needed grammar, gap fills, intonation and pronunciation drilling. Activities for Activate stage should motivate student to properly use learned grammar in written or oral story-telling, discussions or debates. Language functions include: Compare and contrast Persuasion Asking questions Expressing likes and dislikes Cause and effect Summarizing Sequencing Predicting Agreeing/disagreeing Greeting people/introductions When teaching about language functions, it is important that teachers explicitly teach the vocabulary and phrases associated with each language function and appropriacy of it's use. The structure of the lesson could be “boomerang” or “patchwork” in this case.
