This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This Unit was most useful by clearly demonstrating the difference between a poorly taught class and a well taught class. It was great to see teaching in action and the significant impact (positive and negative) that good and bad teaching can have on students moral, capacity to learn, sense of value and experience. Observing is a wonderful way to learn and in watching the two videos I was able to see clearly the key elements required for good teaching - including the use of a fun and simple engagement phase that linked to the subject matter, the really smooth transition between engagement phase and study phase around vocabulary, introduction of action verbs and the application modal auxiliary verbs that made sense to the students. Simple things such as smiling, body language, use of variety and flexibility encouraging participation in a respectful environment are essential ingredients. The warmth and approach of the teacher - who is in a position of 'power' - was great in demonstrating respect and making sure students felt relaxed, valued and involved in their own learning. It was good to see the modeling of good time management, feedback and illiciting responses and answers through the use of modelling, prompts and questions. Likewise acting out the words and using humour was
a good method. I learnt a lot seeing how he followed up one exercise with drilling and repetition and was able to engage and involve all the students. The teacher in Lesson Two constantly displayed respect by thanking students and using names. He also was able to show authority in the best possible sense - inviting a student to listen who was distracted, asking a student in a nice way to speak up - that was all delivered in respectful way. The teacher in Lesson One was wonderful in showing me the big 'No's of teaching and unfortunately was all too familiar - bored, arrogant, intimidating, incompetent, uninterested and disrespectful. It was compltely teacher centric. Those poor students. It made me think of situations around cultural context and how students as consumers may or may not speak up when the teaching is poor - out of sense of shame. not being accustomed to challenge authority or fearful of negative consequences if they are in a new country. It also made me think how important for teachers in their own careers to constantly evolve, be challenged and have peer review so they themselves continue to enjoy their work and grow.
