This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
The unit deals with productive skills, speaking and writing and their teaching. The basis for both speaking and writing comes from a universal human need to communicate, so in order to conduct a successful class, the teacher should produce the need and desire in students to communicate. When it comes to speaking activities, they are divided into accuracy activities ( usually during study phase, the focus is on producing the correct language), and fluency activities (usually during activate phase, the focus is on the flow of communication). Speaking activities in the classroom are divided into : a) controlled activities (accuracy based activities) where the teacher controls the language, and there is a high level of structure. Such activities are drilling and prompting. b) guided activities (accuracy based, but more creative and productive) where the output is controlled by the teacher, but the exact language is controlled by the students. Such activities include model dialogues and guided role-plays. c) creative communication ( fluency based activities) where the scenario is made by the teacher, but the content of the language is controlled by the students, and there is a small amount of structure. Such activities include free role-plays, debates, communication games, etc. In order
to encourage his/her students to speak, the teacher should overcome the obstacles such as lack of confidence, lack of interest, fear of mistake making, and other, by encouraging student interaction, creating relaxed atmosphere, carefully planning his/her lessons, pairing them up and creating a purpose in his/her lessons. When it comes to writing skills, the teacher should pay attention to handwriting, punctuation and spelling and to expose his/her students to different types of writing and to practise those withe them. A written work should be checked for grammar, vocabulary items, punctuation and spelling, layout and corresponding style of writing. There are two types of writing: situational, which includes writings such as postcards, emails and they are written by certain writing rules, and creative writing which is free in style and form, and includes stories, dialogues and poetry. Creative writing should be encouraged especially. The part of the unit dealing with speaking skills was quite useful, whereas it cannot be said the same for the teaching of writing skills, because there are no real-life examples how to teach punctuation, how to teach spelling, or how to teach handwriting.
