This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
In this unit we were given an opportunity to watch videos of two ESL lessons, a not-so-good lesson and a successful one, and compare. In the first lesson the teacher does not look very happy to be in class, he uses lots of negative words that discourage the students from even trying. He doesn’t use his students’ names, addressing the class as the whole. This creates an impression of a teacher who doesn’t care about his students and his job. In the second lesson, the teacher starts from introducing himself and learning students’ names. He also smiles a lot and gives words of praise and appreciation. All of this helps to create comfortable and friendly atmosphere in class. In the first lesson the teacher fails to give clear instructions, he hurries and insists on students’ answering his questions when they don’t even understand what they are asked to do. When spreading the handouts, the teacher doesn’t go over the task with the students, doesn’t make sure his students know what they’re expected to do – just puts the worksheets on the desks without saying a word. On the other hand, in the second lesson we see how the teacher always tries to face the class, uses mime and pictures to enhance students’ understanding. He also monitors his class,
being very attentive to and positive about mistakes, corrects pronunciation errors during the Study phase. He also asks students to repeat after him in a pronunciation drill. The first lesson isn’t an example of an effective ESL lesson, because the Study phase lacks explanation, and the students never got a chance to work in groups and practice the material. We don’t see any response from them; therefore we cannot tell if they’ve learned anything at all. Even if they have, they never volunteer to share their knowledge, as the teacher’s attitude discourages them from it. In the second lesson, though, the teacher manages to build a good rapport with the class, the students are willing to participate. It is caused by the positive attitude that the teacher demonstrates, and also by his carefully planning the activities for his lessons – they are entertaining and linked well together.
