Lesson planning is important for goal-setting, organization, record-keeping, and time management. Though plans should be simple, flexible, and open, creating some structure for your class is important for having successful classes and getting through a curriculum. Additionally, they can help teachers see and reflect on what the students have covered. Since I teach at four nursery schools about once a month each and about four times at an elementary school, it's very important for me to keep a record of which of the younger students have studied which topics. Otherwise they start to blur in my head. Writing out every detail of a class is not beneficial and doesn't allow for flexibility. Depending on each class, students react differently and have varying levels of comprehension so flexibility is key. However, lesson plans are helpful in that when thinking about the lesson, a teacher can visualize how the lesson will unfold and develop. Teachers can consider problems and/or confusion that students may face, what materials will be necessary to prepare, how much time will be required for each step, and how to transition from one phase to another. This latter point is very important to consider. How will students be grouped? What will the seating arrangement look like? How will you
as the teacher set up necessary equipment or distribute materials in the meantime? How will you get the students to mentally prepare themselves for the next phase as well? Is it a logical transition? How much explanation will be necessary? When lesson-planning, teachers can anticipate problems and then come up with possible solutions. Teachers should also prepare back-up activities and have explanations readily available if they become necessary. Afterwards, teachers should reflect and comment on how the class actually went. Ideas don't always work out in reality, so personal feedback and thinking of ways to improve lessons are important in having successful lessons.
