This unit discussed some of the approaches a teacher can adopt when teaching a new language. A successful teacher must expose her students to the language, convey the meaning of what she is saying, explain how to construct it and use it, and lastly, encourage her students to produce the language in creative and natural ways. The ESA methodology can be applied to teaching this vocabulary, grammar, and function. When teaching vocabulary, the teacher must first select appropriate vocabulary to teach based on the difficulty, teachability, and frequency and coverage of the word. Once she has done this, she can then apply a straight arrow structured ESA approach in which she use the Engage stage to elicit/explain meaning of the word, the Study stage to work on grammar, spelling, and pronunciation of the word, and lastly, the Activate stage to test the student's understanding of the interaction and usage of the word in creative exercises. To teach grammar, the teacher should cover the meaning, usage, forms and patterns of the grammatical form, and she can do this using a more complicated patchwork ESA approach in which mid-level students will work on using their old vocabulary to understand new grammatical structures such as past tense verbs. Lastly, the teacher will show her students certain
function areas of the language they are learning, such as suggesting, agreeing, refusing, etc. These type of lessons require more activation of language and so a boomerang ESA method can be applied in order to facilitate better understanding of such functions through communication activities such as role-playing and group discussions.
