This unit was on lesson planning and the importance of being organized when you are teaching. How will you know that your students are learning if you are not setting goals for them to achieve? There must be a progression of skill sets that the students are acquiring for you to observe their progress. However, when planning lessons, it is vital that flexibility is built in. The students' needs should direct the classroom time, and while it is important to have a schedule and a direction to go, as teachers we need to be mindful of how our students learn, paying close attention to things they struggle with, and even allowing more time to things that they enjoy. When planning lessons, we don't want to be so rigid and structured as to suck the life and joy out of learning, and we shouldn't try to script out every tiny thing we want to cover. Lesson planning provides a guide for us to follow, so that we know we are accomplishing what we set out to teach. When planning lesson sequences, we want to make sure that we are using variety in our lessons and they are not one cookie-cutter format throughout. The students will be bored if each lesson follows the same pattern, and planning out our lessons ahead of time gives us a chance to switch things up and make it interesting. It also allows
us to build in review of previous subjects or vocabulary that has been covered. If we know where we are going with the lessons, we can build off of what students have already learned, refreshing it in their minds and allowing them to use their language skills in new areas. A lesson plan can be looked at as a working document to provide structure to the class and as a guide to refer to, but is not set in stone. Lesson plans also serve as a record of what has already been covered in the class, which is helpful for you as the teacher to refer to, as well as being an aid if someone else needs to cover your classes. Simple lesson plans can help you to be more organized- it can serve as a helpful tool to make sure that you have whatever materials or teaching aids you need for the lesson, as well as allowing you to maximize the time allotted for the class. By writing in the lesson plan approximately how much time you estimate for each activity, you can avoid getting stuck in one area, ensure you have enough material to fill up class time, and even have extra activities planned out and prepared in case you finish sooner than expected. You can also look at the size of your class and plan activities accordingly, so that you know you have enough materials or that you can divide students into
3 groups of 4. Other things to include when planning lessons are the context in which the lesson will be given, or the overall structure of the syllabus where this particular lesson fits in. It's also valuable to include problems that you foresee happening, as well as solutions to address them should they arise. You also want to distinguish which phase you will be using to teach each part of the lesson, how you will convey each concept (by using a game, a worksheet, etc) and the main type of interaction in each scenario (Teacher-student, student-student, etc). We not only want to plan goals for our students, but for ourselves to improve our teaching skills. Sometimes it is helpful to include areas that you wish to work on in the lesson plan, such as focusing on student responses more or calling on different students. You can also perform a self evaluation worksheet after the lesson to see how things went, give yourself tips and see what worked well and what didn't. This allows you to see where you as a teacher can improve and make steps toward growth.
