Productive activities, speaking and writing, serve as communication tools. However, writing is easily neglected due to the fact that some teachers think writing is a 'quiet activity' which should not happen in classroom, so they tend to leave it as homework. Comparing to speaking, writing allows more preparing time. Accuracy and fluency activities are equally important. Accuracy activities usually happen at study stage, in which teachers have control to make sure the correctness of the language. Whereas fluency activities commonly happen during activate stage to allow students experience the language and be creative. Controlled activities refer to activities in which language is controlled by teacher. Drilling, prompting are two examples. For Guided activities, it allows a little more creativity, but the output is still controlled by teacher, such as model dialogues and guided role-play. Controlled and guided activities are all accuracy based. There are also fluency based activities, in which scenarios are created by teacher but the content of language is not. Some examples are: free role-play, discussion, information gap, debates, simulations, communication games. In my classroom, when it comes to speaking, a large part of students tend to be shy. Therefore, I find this unit
very useful, now I know the reason and some techniques to encourage them, such as pair-word and group-word, these two could lessen students' pressure to speak out alone. Providing plenty of controlled and guided practice before fluency activities is another approach, practice makes perfect, although the time may be limited. Writing skills Grammar, vocabulary, handwriting, spelling, layout and punctuation are several differences between speaking and writing. After students finishing a writing piece, they are to check in terms of the above mentioned aspects. Like speaking, writing could be creative too. It is vital to arouse the interests of students to make sure they are engaged in study activities. Writing activities could also be done with pair-work or group-work to involve creativity. Games in the classroom Games are all age appropriate, they should be integrated in lessons instead of just for fun, they are good source of controlled practice and free practice.
