This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
It was my belief that the future tense wasn't as difficult as the past tense as I didn't think there were that many ways in which we can express actions occurring in the future. After reading this unit though, I was completely wrong as the future is definitely one of the more complex tenses of the English language. having eight different ways to say basically the same thing depending on when it you are saying it, and when the task will be completed is a hard hurdle to get over. Most english speakers when asked wont even know what all eight tenses are since the grammar just comes naturally to them. It is this natural knowledge of the grammar which makes me the most uneasy for teaching because my students will not have the same environment that native speakers are put into. To teach a language you need to come from a much more structured and fact based background in order to teach the children properly. This is in opposition to say a native English speaking family that will consistently correct a child when they misspeak but never really need to have real grammar lessons for them to catch onto the mannerisms. It is this natural way of thinking and forming sentences that I have to pull away from because when I look at the common mistakes made in the unit, I keep thinking to myself
well that just doesn't make sense because of this reason or this reason. But when one is just learning the language, that is what they think the correct grammar rule is, it's not as easy as just explaining the rule verbally multiple times and over time the child will catch on. I will not be seeing my students that frequently to where it will be just enough, I need to be master how to explain grammar through a much more textbook, concrete type of method that young learners thrive on. The age group I will most likely be with does not have the cognitive reasoning for non concrete ideas or explanations, they need a much more simplified and straightforward message. This is especially true when there is a language barrier, where choosing the right words to explain a concept may be the factor that allows the children to understand what you are trying to teach. I think that a much more successful way of teaching the future will be through activities as opposed to just dialogue during the activate stage of the class. Being able to do activities that one can reference later on is a good way to reflect on what you have learned. For example, the different situations that you may be in when needing to use the future perfect versus the future perfect continuous as opposed to just the grammatical
differences in my mind will better help the children actively use language properly as opposed to just being able to write it down or annunciate properly. I have come to realize more and more that language, and it proper use, is almost completely time sensitive. When you are addressing, when the event is going to be, for how long, where it will be, with who, and so on are all dictated by the time and I hope that by the end of this course, I will have am ore solid foundation as to how to convey the importance of timing and the situation to the children so that they may be able to practically use the language as opposed to when I was learning latin in which case I only got maybe a couple hundred more points on my SAT scores for it.
