This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
There are two receptive skills. The first is reading and the second is listening. 1. Predictive skills- this is when you predict the content of an article or dialogue such as in a headline or introduction. 2. Specific information or scanning- an example of scanning for specific information is when we look at a magazine or newspaper. We are just scanning through the information not really reading everything but looking for a particular headline or article we are interested in finding. 3. General idea- a general idea comes from reading or listening just to get an idea of what the text or dialogue is about. You are not necessarily reading everything but just getting a general understanding of what the information consist of. 4. Detailed information- sometime we read or listen to get every detail of the information. This is important when getting instructions on how to get to a specific location. We have to listen intently to get every bit of detail available to assist us. 5. Deduction from context- this is when we to be able to understand the meaning of the individual words or phrases from the context that we are reading or listening to. It is also when we want to see beyond the literal meaing of the words. The reason why the choice of topic is so important is so we can keep the
student interested. If the student is not interested in the topic then they are less likely to be truely engaged in the material you are presenting. That is why you have to know your students and what they like. This will help in finding a topic that will interest them and keep them learning effectively. It is good to keep a variety of topic at hand so you can make sure that everyone is equally served with useful topics. A teacher can generate interest in the topic by showing pictures, dicussing and debating the topic, and trying to predict what the text will be like. This will help with motivating the students and keeping the engaged in the task. When this is done you are sure to keep them interested in learning, reading, and listening with enthusiasm. When selecting a text or a dialogue, the teacher needs to consider if the text is authentic or non-authentic in nature. Authentic texts are not designed for language students and in the case of non-authentic text, these are designed for language.", The content of this unit is about teaching receptive skills
