Lesson Planning For a long time I was going on my lessons not really planning what to do exactly, only took the exercises and some handouts about the same grammar topic and I had only more or less some ideas what I will say, how or how much time I will spend on explaining and on practicing. It worked quite good as I was tailoring the lessons to the needs of my students but later, when I really had to schedule every minute of a lesson I learned that I can do personalized lesson even if I prepare everything beforehand and I realized that that way I can deliver a more confident lesson, with more information, with more structure, but at the same time remaining still flexible that resulted a lot better learning experience for my students. Even if I am teaching for years now, I still found very useful information about lesson planning that I will happily use in the future: Main principles for lesson planing: - simple - give the opportunity to be flexible if needed - try to plan the anticipated time for each section - balance between tasks which should be fit together What should be in a lesson plan: - learner objectives - what the students should know and learn by the end of the lesson - personal aims - the area as a teacher would like to achieve - context - theme of the lesson -
teaching aids - list of the materials the teacher will use during the lesson - anticipated problems - procedure - list of the activities to achieve the objective of the lesson - phases - follow the know teaching methods for a successful and effective lesson (eg: ESA) - timing's crucial to plan this right so the lesson will contain the right balance between the tasks and there will not be blank minutes where the students don't work or not engaged in any activities, or to avoid the opposite: to avoid running out of time and skipping important phases of the lesson - interaction - T-S or S-S: who will be interacting in the different stages or phases - class level - number of students - date and time - teacher's name Monitoring lessons: It is very important to continuously improve our teaching skills, to recognize the gaps where more practice or advice from others needed. It is a useful method to track and record the strength and weaknesses and make notes as some kind of self-evaluation - with this we can see clearly where are these points and can take actions to improve them. Planing a sequence of a lesson: sometimes we want to plan not only single lesson but sequence of lessons to be prepared for a longer longer period, to see how a certain topic will be presented during a certain
period of time. It gives some time during this period to spend less time on preparing each lesson, however we have to consider some issues: - not that flexible - sticking rigidly to the lesson plans will not allow us to personalize the lessons in case any issues or other ideas coming up - goals - long term planing with goals help both the students and the teacher see where they are heading that gives more motivation - revision - during the planned period, the context should be reviewed to make sure that it goes as planned - variety and balance - we have to make sure that all the skills are included with variety in the tasks and activities to keep the lessons interesting and enjoyable.
